LPH Community Gardens

Come Grow with Us
The LPH Community Gardens bring residents together to engage in the art of growing food and create green space in our community. Each garden engages residents in designing, planting, maintaining, and harvesting. Beyond gardening, the Gardens offer spaces for community art projects, music, and gathering. Lower Price Hill is a dense urban setting, and the gardens provide pockets of nature in the middle of the concrete jungle.

Upcoming Garden Events
A variety of garden work days, workshops, and social gatherings are held in the Sassafras Garden on a recurring basis each growing season and provide an opportunity for neighbors of all ages to come together to keep our gardens growing, learn more about gardening, harvest free, fresh produce, and share community meals. Check out our event calendar to find an upcoming garden event!
Garden Locations
In addition to supporting more than a dozen home gardens in our neighbors’ backyards and public micro-orchard spaces throughout the neighborhood, Community Matters also currently operates two public community gardens in Lower Price Hill—the Victory Garden (on St. Michael Street by our main campus) and the Sassafras Garden (on Neave Street).

Be a Garden Leader
The LPH Community Gardens employs a garden assistant and teen apprentices (ages 15-21) from Lower Price Hill each season to manage the garden operations. These temporary staff roles oversee the garden plans, maintain the plants, and engage their neighbors in the spaces. Apprentices also learn job and budgeting skills and engage in a two-week internship at a local business to explore career opportunities.
