Art has the power to make us feel and see things that we wouldn’t otherwise experience. It creates a space to be honest and to open ourselves up to the world. When someone is the creator of such an experience, it is empowering and invigorating, as it makes room for connection, growth, and inspiration that go beyond any boundary that divides us. We are no longer just a group of categories of race, gender, sexual orientation, class, and so on. We can be our true selves.
In February 2016, students from Cincinnati Conservatory of Music collaborated with LPH community members to create ‘The Ensemble.’ Together the wrote, rehearsed, and performed an original piece in the Sanctuary. The result was amazing. Not only was the show a hit, but it brought to light the hidden talents we have in LPH. Hiding behind the stigma of our neighborhood are beautiful, talented creators searching for a space for expression.
One of the shining stars of ‘The Ensemble,’ was Destiny, an 18 year old artist and musician from LPH. This was her first performance in front of an audience, and since then she seeks other opportunities to share her talents with her community. With just one opportunity to express herself and to show her passion, she came out of her shell and is seeking to connect more deeply with the arts.
Too often, we reduce people to one box and ignore their true talents and passions. With the Sanctuary, we have space to open up opportunities to explore the creative and allow artists, musicians, and performers to connect with themselves and with their community. It is a space we are people hold the power of expression.
