Community Matters is excited to announce the selection of its first executive director, Mary Delaney. After sharing an administration team with its partner organization, Education Matters, Community Matters has met its initial growth goals and is excited to have Mary lead the organization forward.
Mary is one of the founders of Community Matters and has served as its Vice President since 2014. With many years of experience in the nonprofit sector, we are excited to bring Mary’s expertise and passion to the role of executive director. In her role at Community Matters, Mary has spearheaded the development of innovative programs; including the launch of the Washing Well laundromat, development of a new youth center in partnership with Santa Maria Community Services, and the successful operations of Community Matters’ core programs. Mary’s strength is in her abilities to bring people together to drive social innovation.
Founded in 2014, Community Matters has deep roots in the Lower Price Hill community. The vision for the organization was developed from the leadership team at Education Matters, Jen Baker (Walters) and Mary Delaney, who understood the growing need for a catalyst for community development in Lower Price Hill. Community Matters works side by side with residents to create a thriving place to live, work, and engage.
Message From Mary
I am honored and humbled by the opportunity to lead Community Matters. When I first started working in Lower Price Hill in 2010 I said I would give this a try for a year and see what happens. Six years later, I am in love with this community and inspired by the passion and love of our residents. Growing up in poverty in a small rural town, I firmly believe that having opportunities in your community matters. I felt that I had to run away from my community to escape poverty and this experience gave me the drive to find ways to build community from within, instead of trying to run away from its issues.
Community Matters has the drive, creativity, and skills to create a thriving Lower Price Hill with our neighbors. I look forward to continuing to work with our staff and community to make it happen.
